Innocent Venus

So yeah, first off, here be spoilers for Innocent Venus. Lots of them. And I kinda recap the series...okay mostly re-cap the series. So yeah.
Why is it it's either the pilot or the mecha that has been messed with?
So it is probably about 2035. Food is scarce, humanity is broken up, and some countries have managed to get it back together...mostly. Okay so, the world of Innocent Venus reminded me a LOT like the world of E's (and maybe Scryed). Post apocalyptic, parts of society that are poor and stay in war-torn or destroyed areas, and part of society that lives in the cleaner, re-built areas. Standard for this type of series I think. It wasn't war but hyper hurricanes that destroyed millions in little time.
So we have Sana also known as Venus to all who's after her. She's important, of course. But she has no idea of such, and while sometimes this annoys me, it didn't in this anime. There's Jin, white haired and brown/golden eyed who's protecting her. And Joe, silent and dark, who helps them escape. We're also soon introduced to Gora, who is this really annoying kid who has been living on his own for a bit. Looks vaguely like Naruto to me for some reason. Kinda sneaky, but has a few resources of his own.
They're on the run. Jin's trying to find them a safe place to be, but also trying to find out more about why they're chasing them. And they have two mecha suits they're bringing along so they need a big truck. Which also attracts attention. Heh.
And the people chasing them? Phantom. A collection of anime stereotypes. Mostly. Okay, the 'hey didn't I see you in a different anime before?' guys. :D There's the Wufei guy with tarot cards, the white-haired psycho that of course likes to lick the knife, Steve the bald guy with a tattoo, Riki - yet another strong arm grunt, and the vice-commander who's pretty awesome. Their leader, Drake, who commands them all.
Of course Jin, Joe, Sana, Gora get found. In driving along this sea road, they run into these pirates. Well more like these pirates are interested in them. They hijack the truck while Joe is out fighting. And we meet pirate captain Shiba, who used to belong in Phantom, and seemed to have a relationship with the blonde woman. (Sorry can't remember her name.)
Okay, so far the series' pretty good. I'm curious as to what Sana is or what's her secret to why she's being chased. Kinda curious to how Jin and Joe hooked up to help protect her. And rolling my eyes about Shiba. But they're good guys and they let them go on. And they get to a village that's been self sufficent, but hey those guys are there now, so they're rubble now. But there's some important information picked up by Jin about Sana's father's work, and Sana meets her grandfather.
Phantom of course does their best to capture them, and finally succeed when they're in the country(?) of Satsuma. Jin's tinkering with piano music that Sana knows how to play which can make her react to a certain tones. Just slightly out of tune notes. This time Jin's pushed it a bit far, and Sana needs medical help. That's when Phantom gets a chance to capture Sana. Jin and Joe of course give chase to the lab she's been taken to. THe army though doesn't like that they had Shiba there so they start attacking the country. Phantom of course had a hand in that.
Then we hit episode 8 and all hell breaks loose.
They're in the lab after Sana, who's been kidnapped. Jin and Joe of course go after her, but they also run into well...the remains of some people. And by that I mean their brains, spine, and some nervous system. Its explained really briefly then that the suits, the Gladiators, have the children's nervous systems in them to allow others to link up with the suit. Ew. And the fact these Seven Children were created for just this purpose...is just bloody wrong.
But Sana, she's considered the mother to make more of the Gladiators. And at the beginning of the ep, she remembers the other children she was kept with. But they don't have the key to help create more.
So because of Gora following them in the truck, the base/lab is on alert, and Jin and Joe are seen. They get outside and get into their mecha suits, and get caught up fighting Riki. See, earlier Riki lost control while piloting and the commander got him hooked up to fight again. So they get trapped into a test fighting area and get knocked out. The two wake up in the lab with Sana in a glass tube. And Riki, well Riki is very dead. But here, here I don't get it. I haven't seen much of Jin's character, but the hell.
He betrays them both. Stabs Joe, because oh hey he doesn't like talkative men, and walks up to stand with Drake. Luckily Shiba's crew comes by and saves both Sana and Joe (and Gora). Captures the vice-commander since she's in the control room which is gassed. Joe gets medical help and Sana's heartbroken. I can see why. Jin looked like he was completely helping them, and it turned out to be only to find out more about the project. Jin had killed Sana's father after he found out what he could.
Submarine time again, but oops the army's after them again, and there goes the sub. Unlucky bunch they are. But a good bunch of the people manage to escape and they meet up with a bunch of people from Satsuma. Joe and Sana manage to convince Shiba that they want to go back and speak with Jin. Jin on the other hand is now the new vice-commander.
But hey, Joe's pretty damn good and gets into the base. And oh hey, look his Gladiator suit is there. He uses it to fight what's left of Phantom's suit dudes. Hmm, no limiter? Whoops. But Joe gets lucky, the suit's kid syncs up with him. Crazy knife guy bites it when Joe gets awesome suit manuverability. And well Steve helps with that. Joe grabs Jin and Steve gets to yell his last few sentences. Because a bunch of the army guys in Light Warrior suits shows up and kills him with arrows. The Wufei guy survives but was put out of commission early in the fight.
So they get Jin to talk about the project. Because Sana wants to know. And yeah, kids being chopped up to make the nervous systems for the Gladiator suits. Those without fear and sorrow could make the suits work, because otherwise they feel the kids' emotions and get destroyed by them. And hey Jin has a tracking device on him. So the army dudes shows up again. Joe kicks their butts but Jin gets away.
Sana gets the idea to save the kids. You know at this point, they're only "alive" and not regular kids. But she wants to help them. So she and Gora sneak off. And Joe finds out in a bit that they ran off, and he takes off in his uber suit after them. She of course gets captured, and Gora is left beaten to tell Joe what happened.
Jin on the other hand, goes to Sana's father's apartment, only to get caught by Drake. Drake explains the whole Venus thing. (Which really explains the artwork in the ending. Heh.) And while you think that's the end of him, Joe goes to the theater in the beginning of the show to get his stash of dynamite, and sees Jin.
So white versus black, Jin was fascinated with Joe's lack of ego, his lack of self. But now that Joe has gotten an ego, how would he fair now? Pretty damn good I think.
Shiba's not been quiet throughout this and has rounded up an army, with the words 'Satsuma has risen.' They're going to revolt against the established army. Shiba, the ex-vice-commander (really got to look up her name), and the others infiltrate the base. Shiba even retakes command of his old Gladiator, but Drake attacks and stops him.
Drake's been busy too. Although he was watching their fight, he apparently has gotten the remains of the children and some uber suits made up. So after Jin stupidly turned off his limiter, and boy does the children don't like this, he goes nuts. Joe tries to help him, but yeah don't piss off the children that make up your suits. Jin dies...I guess. Either that he's pretty much too nuts to do anything really.
Joe goes to fight against this uber suit but gets put out of commission quickly. This uber suit sends out pulses that controls electronics within miles. Ships, helicopters, subs, they're all screwed really. And the missles start firing everywhere. Drake gets kicked out when the children realize, oh hey, we can end everyone with this suit. Joe tries to gain control the suit. Sana manages to get connected with the children, sees Joe being swallowed by darkness, and tries to get the children to respond. And she succeeds.
Drake gets killed cause yeah the children didn't like him, but the destruction is stopped. And Joe races in to find Shiba's crew helping Sana down from an examination table. Yay! Joe decides to wander the world, to see things. Sana, Shiba, and the rest have to rebuild.
So, interesting series, but I feel there's some things that were left open. Definitely had some twists and turns I didn't expect. I did end up like Gora towards the end. The whole betrayal bit was very unexpected and it seemed like they kept changing Jin's character. Joe ended up being very awesome. And Sana was cute! :D I think it being a short series did help it, cause I don't think it would have worked as well with a regular 26 eps series. Though maybe they could have had some more explanation. Maybe its me being tired. Anyways, not a bad series.
