For those with paid accounts, LiveJournal is offering a few free days for the DDoS attacks that happened on August 6th. You have to redeem them by September 10th.

And I thought to pass this along. An Etsy shop with baked goods. :D And its gluten-free, allergen-free, vegan, and parve pastries. Her statement at the top is: "I can bake for vegans, for GF/CF/EF/NF eaters, from Hershey to Pierre Herme."

Basically they're having a baby and this shop is for side cash. More info can be found here. But I thought I would pass this along since I know two people who can't have gluten. :D And don't worry about the "1 in stock" listing. She adds another as they sell cause of Etsy's listing fees. And feel free to talk to them! They've been very responsive in comments.

I'm tempted to order some brownies...when I get some money. :D

Also, I have updated my graphics drivers....finally. Yeah, I can be slow about it. Lets hope that this resolves the computer freezing up issue. Because it's not fun, and I don't think its heat related anymore. Well mostly. See, I took the case off Sunday evening after two freezes in case it was the heat. One of my power supply fans have died but the other one is still trucking. I had another computer freeze last night with the case off. And the video card fan is still running well. So, graphic driver update.

(And yes, I could be using freeze the wrong way. Also known as locked up. Basically, a restart is all I can do.)

Why hello SURPRISE WINTER!

I betting the wild flowers that had sprung up already around here are thinking they've been had. I mean we have Indian Paintbrushes, Blue Bonnets, buttercups, and those tiny white/purple flowers already blooming. Azalea bushes have been blooming. We were in SPRING! (For southeast Texas anyways.)

Apparently not. It was 48 degrees when I drove in for my chiropractor appointment this morning. 48 degrees! Our high today is predicted to be 50 degrees.

Meh. However, we do need this rain as we're under a burn ban. We finally got more than just sprinkling last night.

Also, I've mentioned this before on this journal about other LiveJournals' being hijacked. [livejournal.com profile] news has finally posted about this. Please read it. Especially if you ever used Hotmail for LiveJournal.

LJ Servers being moved 11/18.

So, LJ will be down for at least four hours. Possibly more. Check out status.livejournal.org for status updates.

First off, there's been a bit of hacking going around on Livejournal. There's at least one bigger LJ I read daily that's been hit. While you can't really stop a determined hacker outside of taking the machine off the network, you can slow them down. They seem to be hitting e-mail addresses like Hotmail that are attached to the LJ that the user no longer has control of. And while they seem to be hitting larger journals, it never hurts to check what your account is listing. (E-mail management is here.)

Here's some posts about it, including several from [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge which was one of several who's been hacked. An account of the hack from [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's side.

Three Things to remember before freaking out Which is a good summary of what to worry about.

1. Most importantly: If there are any email addresses associated with your LJ account that you no longer have control over, remove them remove them remove them remove them now. If they are the originating email address on the account, uh, reopen the account or contact LJ support to get it removed, I suppose. It can be done -- they removed my hotmail address permanently.

Another community hacked and what to do if you've clicked on the link.

Besides being hacked, the hackers delete all the journal entrys and post a "hey go look at these awesome lyrics" post, which has a keylogger on it when you visit it. Fun, huh?

Some things to backup your LiveJournal with, which by the way, is also good for the uber rare occurance that the LiveJournal database servers go down in flames with their redundant backups: Backup links )

Interesting thing I found from the commentors was this Firefox addon - Keyscrambler. It's interesting. And it does have an IE component.

Test your typing speed! I'm roughly 68WPM. How about that. :> If I don't get too flustered because of the ticking clock that is. (And subtract all the errors I make...)

Now, for fun: The Brave Superhero List in response to the Evil Overlord list.

So for the TL;DR version: check this when you're logged in, if you don't have control of any address listed there, remove it.

Screw it. It was going to be an ETA for this, but now it is a whole new post. Sorry if I'm spamming.

RE: the previous post: [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda lists out what's been going on.

BUT!

[livejournal.com profile] theljstaff aka LJ official posters, just posted in [livejournal.com profile] lj_2008 an apology. It's not in [livejournal.com profile] news, which is where it probably should also be, but it is an official LJ community. Huh.

The announcement last Wednesday was a mistake in regards to Basic accounts, as the change was not clearly stated, it did not allow for you to provide feedback, and went into effect immediately. Many of you have pointed out that the decision worried you less than the way it was communicated. You should have been given a voice, and you were not; we didn’t follow our own rules, and we apologize.

At this point we are working on a solution to enable existing LiveJournal users to create new Basic accounts as so many of you have requested. Nothing has been decided yet, but we are considering options which would allow existing users to continue to create new Basic accounts.

I'm beginning to wonder if it is two different people posting this stuff. Considering the tone of the last [livejournal.com profile] news post. Maybe the two should meet and trade PR tactics.

[livejournal.com profile] sarcastic_elf, I think your Hope Diamond analogy is sounding more and more true everyday.

Okay, yes, this is another "What did LJ's owners fuck up now?" post. If you're not interested at all, that's fine. I'm not certain how everyone's friendslist are so I'm passing the info along.

There's a content strike on Friday brewing for LJ. Current outrage is due to this (article within) and LJ not letting its customers know upfront about a change to the accounts. (Another less incendiary translation of the article by [livejournal.com profile] furiosity, with some helpful cultural points. )

So, want more info?

Here.

I like [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic's view here.

An industry POV of all this by xie_xie_xie (IJ).

Personally, with so little time to spread the news, I don't think it's going to do much. But I probably will be inadvertantly participating by the fact I really don't post much on Fridays. I look at my friendslist...unless I'm trying to fit in some game time before I leave for the gym. Last week I saw my friendslist on Thursday, and didn't see it again until Sunday.

Or they can go by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge's suggestion and post the heck out of LJ til one of the servers goes down.

As usual with certain LJ news lately, its being found out by word of mouth.

The End of Basic Accounts on [livejournal.com profile] no_lj_ads.

And on the most current [livejournal.com profile] news post it is very briefly and vaguely mentioned that: "We streamlined and simplified things so that now it’s faster and easier than ever to create a LiveJournal account." Statement from VP of Product Development Jason Shellen. With more spin of course.

Entire thread where someone first brought up the no Basic accounts anymore.

I think if they were upfront about it, it wouldn't have been as much as an outrage. There are LJ Support volunteers even posting in that thread advising them that they should have been upfront about it.

So far Basic users are okay. I'm not sure if they can continue to create more Basic account, but now the options are all Plus and Paid. I just started reading the [livejournal.com profile] news comments and it'll take a while since those commentors are fast.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo for pointing this out.

Man, and this day was so awesome too.

ETA Thursday: Oh, they updated the [livejournal.com profile] news journal with another post. That was posted today. And oh wow it's got 22 pages of comments already. No apology, just more spin along the lines of "We're still working out how to strike just the right tone when communicating with such a diverse and complex collection of communities." Not that I expected an apology. Or much really. I'm shocked they posted so shortly after the original post.

The comments I've seen so far? Seem mostly to be "Tell us before making such a change." That was four pages in. I'm not tackling the rest.

PS. I really debated making this a new post, but decided on an ETA. I may regret that later. ^_^
