A little late in doing this, but I forgot about it.

July's Books:

Traitor's Moon by Lynn Flewelling

Pumpkin Scissors Vol. 03 (Argh! Cliffhanger.)
Love is Like a Hurricane Vol. 03 (Mindless fluff. Always fun.)
Vassalord Vol. 01 (Yay! Finally. Now to snag vol. 2 in Japanese!)
Switch Vol. 03 (I couldn't remember if I read this in June or July. So July it is!)

Yeah, that's not much. But August's list has almost beat it already!
riari: (KH2 Roxas Who Ever I Am)
Books read for this June!

Death Note Vol. 04-10
Clan of the Nakagamis
Return to Scandalous Seiryo University
Beyond Scandalous Seiryo University
xxxHolic Vol. 12

Nightrunner Series by Lynn Flewelling:
Luck in the Shadows
Stalking Darkness
Shadows Return

Yeah, not much. The internets ate me. And Odin's Sphere. And then at the end of the month Shadows Return came out and I've been re-reading the series since I finished the fourth book. I hope to finish Death Note in the next week.

Also, fun note: DDR has to be the only game that I know of where Silent Hill is known as a Christmas song.

No, I'm not making that up. DDR Max 2 has it.
riari: (KH2 Sora Lost Freedom)
Yeesh. Anyone on my friendslist reads the Nightrunner series from Lynn Flewelling?

It took me two bookstores to get the new book. Borders on Kirby didn't have it, and the computer said it was on the way. So I went to Bookstop on Alabama and found it there, after some help from the staff looking it up for me. Because I missed it the first time looking for it because I was thinking that the beginning of the author's last name was spelled with Fw and not Fl. Yeah my brain sucks sometimes.

Also picked up Death Note vol. 11-12. Finished up vol. 10 last night and started Shadows Return last night. Spent pretty much all day reading it today. Except for a quick session of DDR. (For which my brain still likes to flip the down/up arrows. Very annoying.)

ExpandOh spoilers galore about Shadows Return. Basically a summary of the book is within and the ending, so if you don't want anything spoiled more than the back cover copy of the book, then don't read it. I mean it! )

ExpandThinkings on the books. Still spoilery?? I think, but not as bad. )

So, a pretty good book. Though, damn that epilogue, we have to wait until 2009 to see the next one, labeled The White Road. I'm still processing it since I read it so fast. But I did like the book. I'm glad to read more adventures of those two.

Though now I want to go back and re-read the first two books. ^_^
riari: (KH2 Moments)

Death Note is getting really interesting. I'm going to have to pick up some more books in the series soon. Oh! The potato chip scene, [livejournal.com profile] sarcastic_elf, is in volume three. Hehe. But man is L bold.

Also, I finally had to throw away my cute little pumpkin this morning that I picked up from Central Market. It lasted a pretty long while. From October to May 31st.

Yesterday I got to find out why people like using Vent or Teamspeak with MMOs so much. It's a lot faster to relay information. If you're getting hit hard, commands to pull back are happening as it occurs. It's pretty neat.

I played City of Heroes for several hours yesterday with a friend on the phone while we played. It made it much easier for me to let my teammate know that my connection needed time to settle and for them to go ahead and do stuff. We also coordinated our attacks on the Elite Bosses we took on. Though holding the phone like that while playing got a bit uncomfortable after a while. I should get a headset if this occurs more often. ^_^ Though talking with friends is probably a lot more fun than random strangers.

Man, the Mistress of Madness was really tough. We ended up digging through our temp powers in hopes of finding something to help us. Thankfully, we both had a Build Snowbeast pet from the Christmas gifts. Without those, I don't think we could have taken her down last night. Unless we went to get Shivans...

So it was a lot of fun. And I'm further along the path of level 44. ^_^

Oh! I forgot. Today for Random:

-My throat's been bothering me today. This worries me, because my throat bothering me is one of the symptoms I have before I get sick. It started a little bit late last night, but its worse today. I'm drinking peppermint tea to help a bit. The funniest thing that helped was some sweet tea from Sonic.

-I wonder what that flower tea from Yum Yum Cha is called. That was good to drink with honey when I was sick at work.

-Speaking of sweet tea, my university's Sonic has a nice deal on. A 36oz drink of sweet tea with ice for a dollar.

-Death Note volumes take a while to read. Words, words, words... I think I'm reading it mainly to see what Light does next and how will L capture him. I'm almost finished with volume two. Though I don't think I can marathon read this series. One book at a time is enough. ETA: Woah, social engineering. Works rather well really. So, L's getting closer, someone figured out most of it, but she's now dead. Sad thing about this series is that you start getting to know characters, then Light offs them. Huh.

-Pumpkin Scissors is interesting. We see bits and pieces of the corporal's history. The blue steel lantern tale...

-An anime series that has been rather odd but rather interesting at the same time is Library Wars. No, really. Two organizations going to war of sorts with guns and battles, over books. Give a try.

Well, fuck.

Borders hoists for sale sign

I seem to be involved in several industries that aren't doing so well. Figures, huh?

I mean, the anime industry isn't doing all that well right now. Most noticible was when Geneon fell. Bandai Visual (not Bandai Entertainment) just announced they were putting three titles on hiatus to reorganize how they released in the US market. (Okay, well Bandai Visual's take on releases weren't the best, I will admit. At least not for the US market. It would have been fantastic...for the Japanese market. :P )

And the print industry is not in the best of health either.

Though now I think of it, this isn't the only industry hurting right now. Any one else notice that a lot of industries are starting to have problems? (Except for maybe fuel...)

Though in other fun news, Bandai Entertainment just announced the rights for Code Geass season 2. Well, at least I don't have to worry about that for now.

Hehe, I started yesterday afternoon to clean the top of the plastic containers I have next to my desk. And when I had the top open, I had the brilliant idea of "hey, why not catalogue what's in the containers so you can find stuff later?"

I think I finished all three containers at....midnight? Something like that. Kept getting distracted by flipping through some of the books. And it takes longer to catalog Japanese books when I can't read the kanji, which requires searching the internets for the title.

I stopped last night with 126 books catalogued. I'm predicting I might end up near eight hundred books once I get all the bookshelves finished. Why that number? Well, I have four bookshelves. Granted one is small, but on the other three, most of the shelves are doubled up. So yeah, a lot of books. :>

It's interesting to see how the basic list I had started in Excel evolve to the current list I have now. My column names are currently thus: ISBN, Description, Subtitle, Imprint, Publisher, Location, Type, Genre, Subgenre, Subgenre2, Author, Artist, Language, Notes. I had just started out with the bare basics but it evolved as I typed things in and realized I needed other columns. Ahh databases. I miss working with you. :>

Currently it's going to be an Excel list, but I hope to either a) possibly learn how to make a Palm interface so I can have a handy list of my books, b) use this to help relearn SQL to build a database with this information. Either way, it's going to be handy to have my books catalogued.

(Though it was a surprise to find a stack of doujinshi in one of the containers. Don't think I've seen those since I put them in there.)
riari: (KH Deep Dive!Riku?)
For those not interested in City of Heroes, and like Neil Gaiman, here's something for you.

Celebrating the seventh anniversary of his blog, Neil Gaiman and Harper Collins are making one of his books available for free online. The thing is? You get to decide!

The Birthday Thing

Go! Decide! I'm not sure which one I'm going to vote for. Probably the one I want to read most. :>

ETA: fixed a sentence. This is what I get for typing too fast. :>

From the Field Guide to the Apocalypse: Movie Survival Skills for the End of the World under the Neo-Medieval World, about How to Choose an Intimidating Vehicle:

The Tank

If you can get a tank, get a freaking tank!

Pros: It's a tank! It can go, like, sixty-five miles an hour over open ground and still hit targets a mile away with a cannon that fires depleted uranium bullets.

Cons: You'd have to get a tank from someone who has a tank. Good luck.

This book is hilarious. I'm finally reading after borrowing it from [livejournal.com profile] sarcastic_elf uh about two working on three? years ago. It basically covers three different types of apocalyptic futures: the false utopia (think soylent green), neo-medievalism (Mad Max), and advanced technological dystopia (Bladerunner, Matrix, Fifth Element). About what you have to do to survive, to be intimidating (see the tank above, and how to dress), and ways not be turned into soylent green, etc. I'm halfway through and currently in the Neo-Medieval section, but I definitely can see the movies this was based off of. It also does cover some serious issues like what can cause an apocalypse. The chapter on creating your own diesel fuel was interesting. But the humor that follows is awesome. So far a very, very amusing read.

Tip: Remember, knives and swords don't need ammo, and they don't need to be reloaded.
riari: (FMA Roy Mustang)
Dammit, I need to catalog my collection and soon. At least the English stuff. I just found my third double purchase, though at least this time it's a book which was a cheap purchase at Yaoi-con. The other two were DVDs.

*sigh*

Okay, this explains why Amazon and Borders are late getting the newest batch of Go Comi's titles.

From an admin post on Go Comi's forums in response to a question about Amazon's odd date release for the last volume of Tenshi Ja Nai:

For reasons even I don't know, our printer was late with the latest batch of books. However the books ARE finished, and Tenshi 8, Cantarella 8, and Hikkatsu 1 are shipping from our distributor next Tuesday. That means they will start hitting the shelves about 2 weeks after that. In the meantime, you might want to keep checking our store to see if we have them in stock yet.

This was written on the 23rd, so Cantarella should be at stores supposedly in early October.

Then again, I'm starting to suspect that the Borders at Kirby is not exactly putting out new books due to their current sale. Or something's going on. They're late on quite a few books. But I could be expecting too much. :> xxxHolic vol. 10 did make out, but Le Chevalier d'Eon vol. 02 (also from Del Rey) wasn't on the shelves. Both have the same release date to my knowledge.

Need to run by a Barnes & Noble soon and check out their stock.

What I truly, truly miss right now at this moment from Anime Avalon?

The fact that we had a nice little section of the newest graphic novel released. I'm getting the feeling we were one of the few places that actually had a section like that for graphic novels.

It's damn hard right now trying to figure out what got released this month, what books I'm still looking for, and what might be new and interesting that I would like to look at. Also, who the hell has them is a big question.

It's just really frustrating.

I'm not having much luck either finding someone with a complete/nearly complete release list sorted by month. *sigh*

I get this sudden feeling for Yaoi-con that I might be buying just as many graphic novels as I will Japanese books if someone has them at a discount... (I really miss my discount. Eight years of having a discount available really does spoil a person.)
riari: (KH2 Hollow Bastion)
So, after a fruitful shopping trip to Ikea yesterday with [livejournal.com profile] sarcastic_elf, I am now starting to clean off a bookcase to put a new one in its place. And just the first shelf alone tells me this is going to be a doozy. This is the bookcase I've had for years, and as such, it was the first place I stuffed things to get them out of the way. There's another one next to it that has to move today too and that one's even worse. (Though I have made some effort to clean it in previous years.)

I have hopes to move two bookcases, take out my dresser and replace it with a shelving stand and have a place to hopefully put most of my books. (Need to sell some.) It's going to be a busy day and why did I get a late start on it...

*sigh*

*runs off to clean while trying not to sneeze at the layers of dust*

ETA: Well, it's midnight and I have to stop working. The two bookcases are clean and out of the way...mostly. The table is full of books and small figures. The chairs are full of miscellany that I need to sort through (and buy organizers since some of this stuff is jewelry and costume items). I'm using one moved bookcase to hold the books from the other bookcase and so on. Oh god do I need to sell/get rid of some books. I'm highly tempted to recycle all of the Asuka and Chara magazines I have on hand since June is too far away to wait to sell them.

And I just found my first known duplicate purchase - of Terry Brook's Shanara series. I have purchased newer versions of books I now know that I already own. And I thought I sold my two books of the Wheel of Time series but I'm looking at them right now. So those are going to be sold off. And the hardcovers of a Mercedes Lackey series that if I want to re-read (which I did like that one...mostly) I can buy the paperbacks for cheap. (If I don't have them already buried somewhere...) And I DID buy V for Vendetta! I thought I did!!

I have a feeling that I'm going to be sorting books and finishing Tuesday. There's a dresser still to be moved and taken to storage, two bookcases to be put together and arranged while hoping that they all fit. Then moving all the books and figures and what not around. Erg. So much dust... But Traby is put together and it's looking good so far. I think I am going to have to get that second section of it to put the game consoles in... I think.

I have a new bookcase!

It's beautiful, tall, and full of books. I even managed to put up some more artbooks that was sitting on top of other artbooks (where they had to sit until I got more room). And if I got the extension I will have a floor to ceiling bookcase.

This is one of those times I would have liked to have a digital camera so I could show before and after pictures.

I did get another slimmer bookcase to use as a corner bookcase but the room isn't set up for it just yet. And it's going to store all of my artbooks. (I hope.) So it's got to sit in its box until I get more munny for furnature. I think my income tax return is going to be used for another bookcase. ^___^ I was so tempted to paint since I had the spot empty to switch out bookcases. But that's going to have to wait until later.

It's so beautiful. *sniff*

Now I'm all sore from moving around the books, the bookcases, and the containers full of stuff in front of the bookcase. But it was worth it.

So Books..

Okay, what do you do with a loose-leaf math book when you're way done with the class? Especially one that's from at least a year or two ago and that's specific to the university? I have no use for it any more. It's huge and its in a huge binder to keep it all together. I doubt I can find an interested buyer provided that the classes are still using that books.

Oh, and if anyone reading this journal has any interest in the Japanese manga for Pet Shop of Horrors or Gravitation, just let me know. Because I have no interest in keeping them any more.

I got woken up this morning by a loud crash at 8-ish a.m. One of my cats tried to climb my desk, therefore knocking over a pile of CDs and a small figure. No damages, luckily, but I let the one cat that really wanted out out and went back to bed. Was woken up at 9 a.m. because of something, checked to see if that cat wanted back in, let in the other cat that was outside already, cleaned up the CDs on the floor, and went back to bed. I know I got up to hit snooze on the 10 a.m. alarm and to answer the phone when my dad called.

Well, at 11:15 I dragged myself out of bed and found something to nibble on to keep me awake. And I stared at the Weather Channel for 5 mins trying to wake up and figure out what time it was. I was totally out of it. It took me that long to figure out, "Hey, the store opens at noon, right? So why is it 11:20 a.m.? Is that really 11:20am or is that the Eastern time one?"

Yeah... I had to scramble to get to the store to open it and even then that was 15 mins late. *sigh* Got an unexpected artbook though today: Higuri You's Jewel. So pretty! And of course the newest volume of From Eroica With Love. ^_^

Also [livejournal.com profile] sarcastic_elf! I get the 23rd off. And I have something to try selling on eBay! (Show me how? Please?)

Random linkage:

I want this figure.

Square-Enix gets more money from me. So four new RPGs announced, including a Final Mix version of Kingdom Hearts II. Dammit. Going to have to buy that one too.

Ichioka's Sleep Gallery Pretty interesting really. Photos of how people tend to sleep.

Dear Banana Fish,

Please stop cliffhanging every single volume. It's getting annoying.

Thank you,

Eroica!

This has got to be the best description of From Eroica With Love I've ever seen:

"It's just the trials and tribulations of a sophisticated, fantastically gay art thief, his band of merry men, and his very un-gay, rigid Nato-officer nemesis. " -Noodle, AnimeonDVD.com Manga Forum Mod

From this thread here.

Totally true. It's just such a great and funny manga. You just have to get use to the art style, which is very seventies.

OMG books!

Woo!

Just bought like all of the DMP releases for this month: Time Lag, Antique Bakery v.4, Only the Ring Finger Knows v. 2 novel, Cafe Kichijouji v.3, and Gorgeous Carat Galaxy. I also bought Fullmetal Alchemist v.8.

Just need to pull a little bit more money from ze bank...because I want to buy the new Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest soundtrack. ^_^ Have enough money for food I think.

Now lets see if any of the show pieces in the Food Network's Fire and Ice competition shatter.

Just because I had to share, Animate picked up Biblos' yaoi line after Biblos declared bankruptcy. Now they have a web page up and running and the first set of books being released on July 10th. Yays!
