It's pretty much just for the fans. Speaking as someone who didn't play the game, Advent Children did very little for me other than some amusing eye-candy and some humor. Even with the brief re-cap.
They should have made a movie based off FF3 anyway. They went downhill after that. But seeing Kefka in all his world-destroying insane glory? Hell yes. And Shadow is the required emo. Edgar was kinda bishy, and Celes or Terra can be fanservice, so you've got all the angles covered really.
