The Dark Knight

Well, I finally saw the Dark Knight with friends tonight.

First off, I must say, that this is very well done movie.

Now, this movie is dark. Yes, I know, the Dark Knight. It distressed me so much more than I thought it would. I had to take a restroom break because I HAD to, and I was really surprised by how distressed I was when I was leaving the theater. I think I took it at the best time to do so, when the two ferries had the decision to press the bomb switch to save themselves. I think high tension scenes have tendency to be too much for me, and there were quite a few in this movie. Especially when the Joker had a knife to someone's face. Lots of cringe-worthy moments in this movie. (Though I think I missed who Dent killed that was the second cop on the take...)

Gary Oldman is freaking awesome. I was so sad when Gordon "died" and I kept freaking out in my head that boy wasn't that guy in the SWAT transport very quiet and why wasn't he saying anything? and oh crap is he one of Joker's men, and then! Bam! Gordon comes out and holds a rifle to Joker's head. Wow.

And wow that guy at the beginning of the movie in the bank was kicking butt with the shotgun. There were lots of good action scenes in this movie.

And okay, when the great rush to save Rachael and Harvey Dent, Batman went after Rachael right? I thought I heard him say that to Gordon and he ended up at Dent's location. So did he really go after Dent or did the Joker mix the locations up?

Heath Ledger did a fantastic job of portraying Joker. Completely.

Weirdly, at the end of the movie, where Batman was discussing how the city needed him, needed someone to hunt, that Gotham needed Batman to be that dark hero. I was reminded of psychology for some reason. That in Batman Gotham's citizens got to/needed to have their dark side. Weird.

Okay, trailer thoughts. We had a lot of them with this movie. The Spirit, Watchmen, and a whole bunch of others I'm now drawing a blank on. I think I want to watch the Watchmen. It looks interesting. And it was talked about a lot at Comic-con how fans didn't think this movie could ever be done. The Spirit though? Not so much. The trailer's a bit odd. Maybe that's in the spirit of the comic. (haha, get it? yeah.)

Yes, The Dark Knight was very, very dark. Far more so than Batman Begins. I was okay with it, though I didn't get fidgety toward the end because I felt it ran too long. I really don't know why the decided to tie up the Harvey Dent story line in this movie. It would have been a great hook for the sequel.

So completely, that that was what pretty much drove him over the edge, he go to into the characters.

I think Batman must have known they locations were switched since he did say that he was going after Rachel and didn't seem at all surprised when he found Dent. I'm not sure.

I went through the same thought process with the SWAT driver. I really should have known when the "killed off" Gordon. But I thought, "Ah, well. Movies are a different universe. Fans are going to be pissed, though." I guess they aren't willing to make that big of a change.

Although, they did bring Gordon's obscure (and in some verions, non-existant) son to the forefront reduced future!Batgirl to a back of the head. I was all, "Come on! That part at the end would have been perfect for lighting the Batfire for Babs!" Now that I think about it, it's funny that I was more okay with Gordon's "death" than with this.

I was SO expecting Barbara to be the only Gordon family survivor. Sigh.

I also totally thought Ramirez and the chunky older detective were going to turn out to be Montoya and Bullock. I was all "*squee*HarveyBullockHarveyBullockHarveyBullock!". Sad now... but do you suppose the resemblence was intentional?

And yes - Ledger was amazing. It's very rare that an actor, particularly one I'm even marginally familiar with, can make me forget even for a moment that this is just an actor. There is no Heath - only Joker. Wow. (He made Misty squirm. Ha.)

I do agree, though, that Dent should've been allowed to toddle off into the sunset, with the movie ending after the second Joker capture. This was the Joker's movie, and Two Face's last scene felt really tacked on. And they really did miss out on a lot of story setup, what with Dent dying and the wife and son surviving. That said, it was still an astonishing movie and I loved it.
