Twilight Princess Comments 01

Woo! Here we go. The Commentary begins!

So after years pass since I have played Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, I have started another Zelda game. This game was the one most waited for personally, since Windwaker was cellshaded mini-Link and I was looking forward to another 3D Zelda like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

And man, the wait has been worth it. (Even more so since I waited so long to actually play the game after I bought it.)

So, the beginning! Link this time is a young man living in the village or Ordana. The kids like hanging out with him, the townspeople respect him, and he works at a goat farm. Link's about to be sent on an errand to the kingdom of Hyrule, but trouble strikes. But before I cover that part...

There's always the tutorial part of new RPGs. They teach you how to move, how to use the camera controls, how to fight, etc. Zelda is not an exception. You learn how to fight, etc. by showing off a few moves to the village kids. You learn how to ride Epona by hearding goats and to jump fences. You even learn how to fish to get the shop owner's cat back to her. And of course, you solve small puzzles along the way. Like finding the pregnant woman's cradle that had drifted downstream. Stuff like that. And there's the throwing you out in a contained area, but not the larger world overall. Several of the kids follows a monkey into the forest and you run after them to rescue the one kid that got captured. No dungeon crawling yet, just a quick teaching you about lanterns and fighting with real enemies. All of it really just another part of the tutorial.

So at the very first cutscene you find out that Link will be running an errand for one of the villagers to take a sword forged in the village to Hyrule. The royalty there had requested it. So after the tutorial days, you herd the goats up for the last time and start to head off. But Illa is miffed that Epona got scratched over a jump that you did recklessly and takes off with her to clean her up. At this point, I'm thinking, "Hey, isn't that my horse you're taking off with?"

Then the trouble starts. Illa is convinced that it really wasn't your fault due to recklessness, (though Link should have taken care of it), and is in the process of agreeing to let Epona go. Then some enemies appear, kidnap Illa and the girl with you (forgot her name), and club Link across his head. Link wakes up just as darkness is descending on the area and he gets dragged into a weird Twilight/Shadow realm, where he turns into a wolf!

So:
-Wolf Link!

-Wolf Link is fun to play. You get to dig places, he fights differently, and you have to be sneaky a bit when you return to your village...in wolf form. Sorta scary part: His senses allows Link to talk to spirits, which is what the people of Hyrule and other areas are now. Those under Twilight do not keep their form apparently.

-We meet Zelda really quickly! But, she sends us off. She did explain what was going on...sorta. Zelda did what she could in the situation, but I wonder why she didn't turn into a spirit... Though I believe the whole she being the "Twilight Princess" and part of the Triforce in other games saved her. After all, it's Legend of Zelda. It'd be useless if she was dead early in the game.

-Hyrule...is confusingly under darkness already. That was fast. But I'm not all that shocked. It took longer in Ocarina of Time for that to happen, and it's the Zelda game I remember more of.

-Midna is interesting so far. "Oh I can help you, but I also need you to help me," sorta thing. Thankfully she helps out poor helpless Link. :> When you are back from the Twilight, you can see her still riding Wolf Link in your shadow. If you have problesm, you can call to her for help. We don't know what/who she is just yet, but she does seem to be a resident of Twilight. Thanks to her I finally figured out how to defeat some of the bigger enemies in the Twilight zone, but it took me a few tries to figure it out.

-Voices: I forget that Zelda is not like the current games out there where every sentence or cutscene sentences are voiced. There are voices in the game, but its more "Hello!"s and giggles, other sounds of awe or shock, and so on. They add to the characters you are chatting with. Link doesn't say much of course, but he has the usual voiced actions "hi-yahs" and fight moves. Wolf Link has the same, but in wolf growls and so on. Midna's speech is the most interesting. She makes a lot more talking like sounds, as though she is speaking her language but we understand it in English.

-The style! I really like the new style the clothes and building are. Even the enemies are stylized. The new version of the traditional green Link clothes are great. I stopped just as Link found out that he was the legendary hero. It was also just before one of the dungeons so it was a great time to stop. :>

So far, it's been a great game and I'm giving my GameCube a workout! :>
