Eww
Today I realized that humanity is disgusting.
I came about this realization thanks to a ton of rain that poured down Sunday evening/Monday morning that flooded the store and my surrounding areas. It was at 2am in the morning that the store was reported to be flooding so I couldn't do anything about it and nobody else could get to it due to flooding of their areas. Which meant that anything on the floor was soaked.
Yesterday was getting the water off of the floor and some minor cleaning day. Today was the tossing out of wet stuff day and packing boxes for Oni-con day. And boy, there was a lot of books and DVDs we had to throw out. Half of a box of courier bags had to be thrown out, a box of costume clothes we totally forgot was there, artbooks, Japanese and English manga, some region 2 DVDs, and some more I just forgot. A depressing amount of books though. Even one box that we had already packed for Oni-con had to be thrown out. And books love to be quadruple their weight when soaked in water.
So all of this stuff was set out on the side walk against our store to drain and be ready to throw out later tonight. Got a couple of, well I guess you can call it stupid, questions about "Hey, did y'all flood?" No. We just threw water on our books for the fun of it. And then, a little later, we had a customer come in and asking if they could take some of the stuff. We tried to persuade her not to. Because, if you think of it, it's really disgusting water that soaked those books. I was pulling paper from my recycle bin under my desk that was brown. But, she still wanted to, saying that it'll be okay when it dried. We were like, we wouldn't want to, but if you want to deal with the destroyed stuff, we weren't going to stop them.
I know the bags could be washed (repeatedly, with bleach) and could somewhat be salvaged, along with the costume stuff and some of the toys. But, the books?
Her family came and they scavanged through the stuff and took a lot of it. My coworker saw someone pretty much speed over to our sidewalk to nab the bags. Another group took some things later, and her family came back for a second time. They even took the garbage bags of destroyed stuff. Even as I left, there were people picking through the books. We threw out flat boxes and DVD cases and what not, but we left what was left on the side walk. Who knows, maybe someone will take it all overnight. (We're kinda hoping that actually.)
But, really... Ick. Disgusting flooded books? What the hell, people?!?! I spent most of the day just shaking my head at that. If I thought they were sellable, I would have kept them.
Meanwhile, at my home, I got a moat right now. Unfortunately it is covering my driveway, but with careful driving, I can escape. Hopefully it will drain tomorrow or so. The curve in the road that had running water over it has one lane dry now. So very soon I will have lawn again.
